Connector Program and RBC help talent grow their network

In a mid-size city like Halifax, connections are everything and when you are first starting your career or moving to a new country it can be tricky to know where to start – that’s where the Connector Program comes in.

The program links newcomers and soon-to-be and recent grads, “Connectees”, with local industry professionals, “Connectors”. By facilitating introductions to their network, Connectors help Connectees enhance their networking skills, build their professional network, and learn about job opportunities.

The Connector Program has an impressive track record of success. Annually, more than 400 Connectees have met new contacts and kickstarted their careers in Halifax, with many finding jobs in their field. There’s also tremendous advantages for local employers who benefit from meeting and hiring bright new talent.

RBC is a case in point. In addition to supporting the program financially and providing Connectors, being a part of the Connector Program has helped the company recruit employees. For example, in the past couple of years, there’s been a huge push on the technology side of the finance industry. As innovation grows, so has industry demand for data analysts, scientists, developers, programmers, business analysts, and project managers.

RBC’s Global Shared Services Centre in Bedford Nova Scotia, which opened in 2015, now has over 700 employees. Nicole Peckford, an RBC Associate Director, supports one of RBC’s teams that is actively recruiting to meet demand.

“We use a variety of means to meet our aggressive hiring goals including our internal recruiters, job listing sites and services, university and college job fairs, and the Connector Program,” says Peckford.

“On top of all this, our employees love participating as Connectors. Not only does it give them the chance to connect with their network, there’s no greater feeling than knowing you might have just helped a new grad or newcomer score their first job.”

RBC has over 50 engaged Connectors in the Halifax Partnership Connector Program.

“Honestly, we can’t say enough about our relationship with Halifax Partnership and would encourage anyone looking for a unique way to engage their employees and/or to recruit qualified, energetic new talent to think about getting involved with the Connector Program. It’s a win-win-win for our newcomers and new grads, employers, and for the city as a whole.”
