Canada's Ocean City Celebrates Oceans Week 2020
Posted: June 10, 2020The 6th annual Oceans Week HFX event took place this year from June 5th to 14th, bringing together business, academia and community to celebrate Halifax's ocean economy and coastal lifestyle.
The event took place virtually this year, and the Halifax Partnership was pleased to support Oceans Week and showcase our ocean expertise and leaders.
With over 7,000 kilometers of coastline surrounding the province and some of the world's leading ocean scientists, researchers and innovators based in Halifax, it's no wonder that our city's motto is E Mari Merces, meaning Wealth from the Sea.
Nova Scotia is home to hundreds of innovative ocean sector companies - spanning ocean acoustics, sensors and instruments, fisheries and aquaculture, life sciences, shipbuilding, ocean observation, marine-centric defence and security transportation, and energy.
In Halifax alone, there are over 60 companies - from startups to global companies - working to develop new and advanced ocean technology. In fact, about 1/5 of all R&D undertaken in Halifax is tied to the ocean sector, and 20% of all research and development jobs in Nova Scotia are focused on ocean technology.
As Canada’s Ocean City and one of the country's leading Innovation Districts, we are proud to be home to world-leading ocean organizations like the Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI), the Bedford Institute of Oceanography, Dalhousie University and The Centre for Ocean Venture and Entrepreneurship (COVE), all pushing the boundaries and advancing ocean science and technology.
Companies looking to start up or expand their ocean ventures will certainly benefit from Halifax's diverse and growing ocean economy.
