Managing Partner
Barrington Consulting Group

This month we talked to Andrew Creaser, Managing Partner at Barrington Consulting Group. Barrington is a business and IT consulting services firm that helps its clients strategize, plan and implement change.

Tell us about Barrington Consulting Group and the greatest opportunities/challenges that lie ahead?

"We are headquartered in Halifax and have offices in Fredericton, New Brunswick and Port of Spain, Trinidad. With a workforce of 50 practitioners, we are poised for growth outside Nova Scotia in areas where we have developed deep expertise, including transit modernization, driver license and motor vehicles services, government services and registries, and healthcare. We offer services in strategy development, project management, change management, service improvement and technology, delivery, and business and systems analysis. We have expanding capabilities in Lean Six Sigma, digitalization and data analytics. Our greatest opportunity is also our greatest challenge in that our next stage of growth exists outside our geographical region and we must challenge ourselves to seize this opportunity."

What do you see as the greatest advantages of operating a business in Halifax?

"As the economic centre of our region, Halifax is a great place to live and work. It offers lower operating costs than larger centres and it is relatively straightforward to recruit people here. Our firm has been in the middle of a youth movement for the past few years and the significant talent pool that exists in Halifax has provided us with exceptional and motivated young practitioners. Aside from the strong consulting services market in Nova Scotia, the City of Halifax is both a supporter and advocate for local businesses to expand into new markets through trade missions. Most of our practitioners are from the Halifax area, which gives us pride when we assist local clients in achieving their goals in addition to getting involved in our community."

Hiring youth is important to the economic growth of Nova Scotia. What is your company doing?

"Our firm has grown to a size where we have enough internal support to hire, grow and develop university graduates. Nearly 30% of our staff is under 30, and we have been able to leverage some of the available labour related incentives for hiring new graduates. We actively sponsor university conferences, focus on university recruiting and have benefited directly from these investments based on the quality of talent we have hired. We have participated in co-operative education programs for the past 10 years and continue to hire at least two interns annually. Many of these have been hired as permanent employees after graduation. Internally, we have implemented comprehensive training and mentoring programs to continue to invest in the development of our younger consultants."
