The Emera IDEA Building houses workshops and prototyping labs for the Faculty of Engineering, and innovation studios focusing on hardware-based entrepreneurship. Prototyping labs and innovation space include infrastructure such as the Michelin Creation Lab, a new state-of-the-art engineering machine shop that will enable larger projects, greater precision and program expansion. The space will have testing and fabrication facilities and will be open to students as well as have co-working space for start-ups. The IdeaHUB helps students and faculty develop entrepreneurial and innovation capacity, design and build prototypes, and launch startups with a focus on “tough tech”. Tough tech refers to new products emerging from engineering and applied science research in areas such as ocean technology, clean energy and technology, advanced materials, food science, water resources, biomedical engineering, bioproducts, deep software, artificial intelligence, the internet-of-things, cybersecurity, as well as various other physical and cyber-physical products.
